Well, this past weekend, we spent visiting my family in Akron, Ohio. My cousin got married at Stan Hywet Hall, which was the home of former Tire Baron, F.A. Seiberling.

It’s pretty amazing that this was someone’s house.

Last night in between softball games, our 60 something-umpire told us-
“come on, let’s get this game going, I need to get home to my wife, she’s going to be having a baby!”
Really?
“Yeah, hopefully nine months from tonight!”
Congrats.

Yesterday, Suz and I had Randi-Kay over for lunch. She just had ankle surgery, so she isn’t able to do much right now. Anyway, you need to read her blog, because she’s a new Christian who is super encouraging. When you go on her blog, click on “My Salvation” at the top right. It’s a must read. Here’s a snippet.
My life has changed. I understand Salvation, I know what it is. I know what a testimony is. I’m happy. I’m truly happy. I’m living my life for Christ. In the 5 months that I’ve been a Christian, it’s been the best 5 months of my life. Honestly. Trust me, I tried everything else. That life has been put to rest, and a new one has begun. It’s amazing
It’s awesome to hear fresh passion, and fresh questions from someone who loves Jesus. Very cool. Oh, and she hates dogs too.

Hopefully my post below wasn’t taken too seriously by those of you who don’t have enough human friends, so you’ve had to buy a dog…. Kidding… kidding!
The whole concept of hospitality is really drawn out in Romans 12 which starts of saying “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
The passage goes on to tell us that we have gifts in order to bless our sisters and brothers and then it tells us to be hospitable by contributing to the “needs of the saints.” Then Paul goes about three steps farther by telling us how to love our enemies. We are to feed and water our enemies who hunger and thirst. This passage always sounds nice. I mean, yes Love is what God is about. Love is the most important ingredient of of faith right? Right.
Practically though, this means we have to be stewards of what we have. We may have the heart of hospitality, but no plan to actually provide that hospitality to others. Maybe our house is so nice it’s like an art gallery and you are afraid of people breaking your stuff. Maybe you smell and you need to learn how to use deodorant. Maybe you want to feed people but don’t know how to cook anything. The whole idea is that if we are called to be people of hospitality, it’s going to take some actually sacrifice. It’s might take a plan. In the end it will probably be easier and more rewarding than you thought, though. Your house doesn’t have to be perfect, you don’t have to be gourmet, you just have to give people an opportunity to tell their stories. It just may take a plan, you might have to reorganize some of your life.

Our record label is now releasing “Cry Out” on Independant Bands. You can listen to preview of the songs and download them individually there. We are really proud of the record and hope that we can contribute songs of worship to people looking for original, God-centered music.
Coming soon to itunes.

Many of you know that I’m not super fond of our canine friends. Of course, I am more inclined to live and let live and if others want to have a naked, loud, non-potty trained mammal living in their house then that’s your own business. I was thinking though on hospitality and budgeting our money and spending money on having people over. Food, drink etc… It costs a decent amount (not tons, but just a significant amount) to have people over and we usually have some kind of party about every other week. I’d say we have probably 800 visits to our home throughout the year. Because of this, Suz and I have tried to put away money specifically for this. It’s been well worth it as community has grown and I’ve heard some really cool stories from some great people. Community is good.
And just to tie in the dog thing, here’s how much Fido could cost you…
APPROXIMATE ANNUAL DOG CARE COSTS*
First Year (Puppies) Each Succeeding Year
Food $400 $400
Distemper/Parvo Inocs $60 $15 (1yr booster)
Rabies Inoculation $20 (1 yr.) $5 (3yr booster)
Worming $25 $10 (worm check)
Spaying or neutering* $55 N/A
Heartworm test/preventative $50 $50
Licensing $10 $10
Accessories (leash/collar/toys) $100 $75
Emergency Vet care $250 $250
TOTAL $970 $815
Now, of course I’m not telling you to get rid of fido, but I do thing that it is important to be hospitable and to make that a priority.
This might mean for us, not spending extra money on food unless we are enjoying the company of our brothers and sisters or even strangers. This might mean we spend money to get a house that has enough space to entertain. It might mean that we have a goal of hosting something a couple times a month.
Question: What is one thing you can do to make your life more hospitable to others?
Edit: Here’s a good article on being hospitable.
