This Sunday we broke ground on our addition. The coolest part was seeing the kids taking part and seeing the example of being outward with this thing so more people can hear about Jesus.
Edit: I should add that the first three pics are from Brett and the last one is thanks to JD Small who flew his plane over the church to get the pictures.

I am teaching this weekend on community and ironically I feel like I’ve had to avoid community to get this teaching done. I probably should have had like ten people all contribute to my teaching to make it edgy or something…
Or not, I think I’d go crazy.
Anyway, I have a crazy week and a teaching to finish too. If you get a second pray that I would speak with wisdom and inspiration.

Thanks to Brian at Semper Reformanda Records (ish’s record label) for pointing out this great poem by Robert Bruce
We know that he
worked as a carpenter
until
in the last years
he gave it up to
travel
tell stories
and generally
piss off people like meWe know that he
was a homeless man
without
his own bed
to sleep in
he relied on the
starry sky and the four walls
of friends and strangers
for brief moments of solitude
and rest from it allWe know that most of his
close friends ended very badly
at worst
tortured and executed
for association with the Jew
at best
exiled to a distant island
after a difficult life
plagued by terrible visions
in old ageWe know that he
was not a social climber
managing
to make powerful enemies
whenever he opened his mouth
he turned to the broke
dined with IRS agents
walked openly with hookers
sat too close to the sick
talked too long to the criminalWe know that he
was sold down the river
by one of his best friends
for around 12KThat he
spent his final years
on the run from the governmentThat he
turned down the desperately
hoped for plans of a Coup d’etatThat he
talked more than anyone else
about unfashionable things like hellThat he
willingly rode to his execution
on a borrowed assAnd yet we still believe
that
Jesus’ main objective
through his hard living
and bloody slaughter
is to make you a
millionaireTo make sure
That your life is
as comfortable as possibleThat your kid
attends the right collegeThat your mortgage
is paid upThat you are given due respect
for your effortsThat your portfolio
is properly diversifiedThat your career
moves from success to successAnd finally
that your confidence
in the Dollar, the Euro and the Yen
is so complete that it
blots out
any need
you may have
once had
for
his
presence

Noel posted about Brandon’s Baptism and I just wanted to repost what he wrote and show the pics.
Last night, my friend Brandon got baptized. It was an awesome experience because it was intensely personal.
The location was intensely personal.
The baptism took place in his dad’s pond, in a beautifully landscaped and yet very natural looking setting. Brandon places a high value on caring for the Earth, and there was no better place than this. (Not to mention the fact that we drank organic juice out of biodegradable glasses made out of corn.)The words spoken were intensely personal.
From Brandon’s words about what Jesus has done in his life to Dan’s words about what Jesus has done for all of us in general and Brandon in particular, the message spoke of a very personal God.The crowd was intensely personal.
There were a lot of people there, and their only common connection point was Brandon. Christians and non-Christians, family and friends, different generations–everyone who was there was personally invited by Brandon because they mean something to him.Baptisms are always cool. This one was one of the best I have ever witnessed.

Brandon is an amazing friend who has a love for God and a love for God’s creation. It was really cool being a part of this symbolic event in his life.

If you’ve seen Rob Bell’s Nooma videos, then you should find this pretty funny.

One thing I wanted to let everyone know is that we are still really early on in the pregnancy, between 3 and 6 weeks. We decided a while ago that if we got pregnant, we weren’t going to wait until the usually 12 weeks. We have had some good friends go through some rough times and have lost their babies and we know that is why many people don’t tell right away, which is very cool. We just felt like even if something happened (God forbid) we’d still want our friends and family to know. We still want people to be a part of our lives whether it’s full of joy or sorrow. Our friends have allowed us to see their struggles and their vulnerability and I really appreciate that. We are family after all.

This reminds me of some body building contests that I’ve seen. Amazing and disgusting all at once.

I’m listening to a talk by Jeff Vanderstelt on developing leaders from The Resurgence. Really good stuff.
(Ministry, the Gospel etc…) does not exist for you. You are not to derive your significance from it. It is not the thing that exists so you can feel worthy. It exist to show that he’s worthy. If it’s about you at all, if your ego is tied up in this, you will not want to develop anyone else. ‘Cause if there’s a bunch of other people that get to do what you get to do, your significance decreases greatly.
