Thanks to Dan Kimball for this:
“I am no music scholar, but I feel I know appropriate church music when I hear it. Last Sunday’s new hymn - if you can call it that - sounded like a sentimental love ballad one would expect to hear crooned in a saloon. If you insist on exposing us to rubbish like this - in God’s house! - don’t be surprised if many of the faithful look for a new place to worship. The hymns we grew up with are all we need.”
Of course, this letter was written in 1863, and the song they were talking about was “Just as I Am”. Here’s another one…
“What is wrong with the inspiring hymns with which we grew up? When I go to church, it is to worship God, not to be distracted with learning a new hymn. Last Sunday’s was particularly unnerving. The tune was un-singable and the new harmonies were quite distorting.”
This letter was written in 1890 and about the hymn “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”.

Here’s our schedule for the next couple of days:
Today: Meetings in the morning to the early afternoon. Rehearsal and dinner in the evening.
Tomorrow: Since Feburary 29th doesn’t usually exist I’m hoping my productivity at work really shows at the end of their year, hopefully my report will say something like “Dan really got at least an extra days work this year.” Or something like that. Also, little detail, Will and Monaca’s wedding.
Saturday: Get up in the morning, pick up Jeremy and Kristen. Drive to Akron, Ohio. Stop in and see the family. Drive with everyone to Swensons. Go see the Avett Brothers at the Kent Stage. Drive back to Mom’s. Watch Wilco on SNL (yes it will feel like my birfday). Sleep. Get up. Drive home. Set up for Merge. Listen to Theme and Variation. Listen to James’s teaching etc…
Next week: Have a baby.
Hopefully that last thing won’t happen before the weekend is over. Otherwise, Jeremy and I may be delivering a baby on the side of the highway. And by “Jeremy and I” I really mean “Kristen.”

There’s something about getting older that makes you want to be more comfortable-an old dog won’t learn new tricks and that sort of thing. Well, my post below I think might be illuminating this in my life a bit. I was pretty set on buying a banjitar, you know since I already play guitar I won’t have to deal with learning a whole new instrument etc… So, Suzanne and I go to Elderly and I play the banjitar a bit and it sounds a little like a banjo, but maybe more like a guitar than I had remembered. So I started messing around with a real banjo and realized that it’s tuned in open G which isn’t really that hard of a tuning to learn. So I messed around and plugged in an electric 5-string banjo and the difference in sound was significant. So, I’m going for it. As soon as I can save up enough money, I’m going to buy a banjo and learn how to play it.

UPDATE, I’m selling the guitar on Ebay if you are interested: Here
I’m selling a couple of items because I’m hoping to buy a “banjitar” (yes, hybrid banjo/guitar) to use at Riverview.
I have a great playing, great sounding electric. It’s a Danelectro 56 Pro Limited Edition that I’m asking $425. You can’t find these anymore new and they are selling for over $500 on Ebay, so this is a good deal. I’ve played the guitar many times at Riverview, so if you go there, you’ve heard it. It’s in great shape, has some slight scratches, because I’ve played it, but looks good, sounds good etc…

I’m also selling a Pignose 7-100 amp. It’s a practice amp, that I honestly just haven’t used. It’s portable and can be used with batteries or an A/C adapter. Very cool little amp. I’ll give it away for $65.

Please let me know if you are interested!

Ok, so my new favorite band is The Avett Brothers a S. Carolina based pre-civil war grunge group. That basically sounds like bluegrass, Nirvana, Doc Watson, with some screams thrown in for good measure.

Paste Magazine is now letting you pick your price (starting at $1) for a year’s subscription. To be honest, Paste is my favorite magazine and it includes new sampler cds of good music with every issue. Thanks Brett for finding this.

So, it’s 2:20 and my body thinks that it’s 11:20, so I don’t want to sleep for another 40 minutes or so. A good time to update you about my adventures to the Pacific NW.
Saturday:
7am- Melissa dropped me off at the airport. No hassles traveling that day at all.
Noon (Pacific)- Arrived in Seattle, met up with Suz, Jeremy and Ben and we ate at a nearby alehouse. Good turkey and a nice glass of Moose Drool
Afternoon- We drove around Seattle and ate at a place that Bill Gates stopped at one time called Teriyaki Plus. .
Sunday-
9am- Jeremy and I went to the Shoreline campus of Mars Hill while Ben caught up on sleep. The campus there is a video venue campus and it seemed to work really well. There were probably three hundred people there, the music was good and you forgot you were watching a video after about 2 minutes. Interesting concept.
2pm- We pick up Brandon from SeaTac and take him to Teriyaki Plus.
6pm- We go back to Mars Hill, this time the Ballard Campus. The music was awesome, the Red Letter band played. Very cool, innovative, theologically solid stuff. Mark Driscoll spoke about how he like anger.
Monday
10am-First workshop with Joe Day, a guy I’ve been emailing a little bit. The topic was Songwriting and it was good.
2pm-Second session “Creating Missional Worship Bands” it was a good talk, but it really wasn’t what the title suggested. The title should have been “organizing you bands.” Some decent stuff nonetheless.
4pm-We ate at Brouwer’s Cafe which also happens to have an amazing beer selection.
7pm-Driscoll spoke on the idolatry of worship. I hope they post this up as an mp3. I will link.
8pm-My mom calls and tells me she’s engaged! Woo hoo mom! (and Ron)…

Ok, well I’m getting sleepy, so I will update the update more tomorrow or when I get more time. I will also be writing an in depth review of the conference when I get the chance.
